What Counts as a Dental Emergency
- Severe toothache or persistent mouth pain.
- Broken, cracked or chipped tooth.
- Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth.
- Swelling, abscess or infection.
- Trauma to teeth, mouth or jaw. (e.g. from a fall or accident)
- Bleeding, loose teeth, lost fillings or crowns.
- Lost/damaged dentures.
- Dislodged braces or wires.
What You Can Do While Waiting for Treatment
Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) to reduce bacteria and soothe irritation.
Use over-the-counter pain relief (e.g. paracetamol or ibuprofen), unless you are allergic or have contraindications, to manage pain until you see us.
If there’s bleeding, apply gentle but firm pressure with clean gauze, and hold it in place for 10–20 minutes. If bleeding doesn’t stop, or if swelling spreads to the face/neck or affects breathing, seek emergency medical help immediately.
