WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
A dental implant comes in two parts.
The first is an artificial root made from titanium that replaces the root of a missing tooth. This can be placed in either the upper or lower jaw and in time will bond with the jawbone.
The second part is attached to the dental implant root. For those missing one tooth, a crown will be created to perfectly match your existing teeth. If you have a full set of dentures, this can be attached to four or six dental implants – you don’t need one implant root for every missing tooth.

YOUR DENTAL IMPLANTS JOURNEY
At Oakgrove Dental Practice, Milton Keynes we’re here to help you through the dental implant process from the very first step:

1: Consultation
With our dental implant surgeon at Oakgrove, Milton Keynes

2: Full mouth assessment
Including x- rays, models of the mouth and photos. This is extremely important as we need to ensure you have enough bone to support the implant.

3: Quotation and treatment plan
It is important that you have as much time as you need to discuss and understand what is involved with this treatment and our aim is to ensure that all your questions are answered prior to commencing any treatment.

4: Implant placement
Our Milton Keynes dental implant surgeon will apply a local anaesthetic and place the titanium post in the location of the missing tooth. This procedure takes between one and two hours and is relatively painless due to the local anaesthetic. You may experience a small amount of discomfort following the placement of the implant but this will subside and healing will occur relatively quickly.

5: Restoring the Implant
Once your implant integrates with the bone, we are able to restore the implant. After taking moulds of the position of the implants, the final ‘teeth’ can be individually designed, manufactured and attached to the implant. Once in place, they will look, feel and function as a natural tooth.

6: Aftercare
The care and maintenance of your implants is the most important part of the longevity of implant treatment. Our hygienists will help guide you to maintain your implants and will establish a maintenance plan for you. This is as important for the health of all your own teeth as it is for your implants.

Durability
With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, making them a long-term solution.

Unlike bridges, implants don’t require altering adjacent teeth, preserving the health of surrounding teeth.
Improved Speech
Implants prevent speech difficulties caused by missing teeth or ill-fitting dentures, helping you speak more clearly.
Low Maintenance
Dental implants require the same care as natural teeth, like brushing and flossing, with no special adhesives or soaks needed.
Improved Chewing Function
Implants restore full biting and chewing ability, allowing you to eat all your favourite foods comfortably.
DENTAL IMPLANTS FAQs
About Dental Implants
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root, supporting a crown, bridge or denture. It is designed to look, feel and function much like a natural tooth.
Are dental implants available privately?
Yes. At Oakgrove Dental Practice in Milton Keynes, dental implants are provided as a private treatment, allowing detailed planning, advanced materials and a tailored approach to achieve predictable long-term results.
How much do dental implants cost?
Costs vary depending on the number of implants required, the type of restoration and whether additional procedures such as bone grafting are needed. Your consultation at Oakgrove includes a written treatment plan outlining fees and any payment options.
What does osseointegration mean?
Osseointegration is the process where bone grows and bonds to the implant surface, anchoring it firmly in place. This process is essential for long-term implant stability.
Suitability & Candidacy
Who is suitable for dental implants?
Most healthy adults with good oral hygiene and sufficient jawbone can be considered for implants. At Oakgrove Dental Practice, our team will assess your oral health, general health and lifestyle factors such as smoking before recommending treatment.
What is bone grafting and will I need it?
Bone grafting is used to build up areas of thin or missing jawbone so an implant can be placed securely. Whether it is needed depends on your bone volume and is assessed using scans and X-rays.
Can I have implants if I smoke?
Smoking increases the risk of implant failure and gum problems. Stopping or reducing smoking is strongly advised before and after implant treatment to improve success rates.
Are there age limits for dental implants?
Implants are placed once jaw growth is complete, but there is no strict upper age limit. Suitability depends on general health and oral condition rather than age alone.
The Treatment Process
What is the process for getting an implant?
At Oakgrove Dental Practice, implant treatment usually involves assessment and planning, placement of the implant into the bone, a healing period, and then fitting the final crown, bridge or denture. Temporary teeth are often provided during healing if needed.
How long does implant treatment take?
From consultation to final restoration, treatment can take several months to allow proper healing and integration. Some cases can be completed more quickly, depending on individual circumstances.
Does having a dental implant hurt?
At Oakgrove, implant placement is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some swelling or soreness afterwards is normal but usually settles within a few days with simple pain relief, and our team will provide aftercare guidance to support your recovery.
Will I be left without a tooth during treatment?
In most cases, a temporary solution such as a denture or temporary bridge can be used while the implant heals. Your team at Oakgrove will discuss cosmetic and functional options during planning so you feel confident at every stage.
Are there risks with dental implants?
As with any surgical procedure, risks include infection, failure of the implant to integrate with bone and damage to nearby structures. Careful planning, good hygiene and following aftercare advice reduce these risks significantly.
Implant Options & Outcomes
Can implants help secure loose dentures?
Yes. A small number of implants can be used to stabilise dentures, improving comfort and confidence when eating and speaking, particularly for lower dentures.
Are implants better than bridges or dentures?
Implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support and often feel more like natural teeth, but they involve surgery and higher initial costs. Bridges and dentures remain suitable options for many patients.
Will people be able to tell I have an implant?
Well-planned implants with high-quality restorations are designed to blend naturally with your teeth. Most people will not be able to tell which tooth is an implant.
Can implants replace more than one tooth?
Yes. Implants can support single crowns, bridges replacing multiple teeth or full-arch restorations, depending on your needs and treatment plan.
Aftercare & Longevity
How long do dental implants last?
With excellent oral hygiene, regular check-ups and not smoking, many implants last for many years and can be a long-term solution. Like natural teeth, they can fail if gum infection or excessive biting forces develop.
How do I look after dental implants?
Implants require the same care as natural teeth, including twice-daily brushing, interdental cleaning, and regular check-ups and hygiene visits at our Milton Keynes practice. Our team may recommend special cleaning aids tailored to your implants.
Do implants need special check-ups?
Yes. Regular review appointments at Oakgrove allow our dentist or hygienist to monitor the implant, surrounding gums and bone so any early issues can be addressed promptly.
